As Trigeminal Nerve (5th CN) is the largest cranial nerve,and supply its sensory route to head and face,so if any abnormality is occurred in the course of the nerve route ,various problems may be occurred
Sudden, extreme ,sporadic, shock like facial pain on face where the branches of this nerve are distributed (scalp,forehead ,jaw, eyes, lips ,nose ,mouth),
which persists few seconds to minutes to hours , due to sudden or chronic stimulus .
TYPES:-
§ T.N1 (TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA):- Typical or classic form of neuralgia.
§ T.N2:-Atypical. VICTIMS:- Mostly in people who are above 50years; although it affects any age groups may be young ,middle aged,even infants also.
CAUSATIONS:-
Loss or damage the myelin sheath of Trigeminal Neuralgia.by any how ,such as pressure effect or compression of blood vessel on this nerve. It may be due to trauma, any oral operation, tooth extraction ,tumors ,arteriovenous malformation ,multiple sclerosis ,stroke etc.
Exposure to wind; vibration of cheek(during shaving ,makeup,washing the face); brushing; talking; eating or drinking etc.
§ Episodic paroxysmal pain ,attacks within short interval.
§ Characters of pain like –electric shock ,sharp , pressing ,shooting ,burning pain.
§ Pain also tends to occur in cycles with remissions lasting months or even years.
§ Pain spreads rapidly due to bilateral involvement or connection with other major nerve trunks, where any systemic cause can play the main role.
§ The severity of pain affects daily lifestyle ; washing the face ,maintains the oral hygiene ,talking, eating is very difficult to perform.
Psychological and social support must require to manage the case ,because at this stage patient suffers from fear ,fright ,anxiety.
